Overview
Temporary exhibition at LAX Airport, incorporating American Sign Language with yoga poses and Eastern hand mudras while referencing the Greek myth’s cautionary lesson on the literal and symbolic impulse for flight. (Digital print on vinyl mounted to aluminum sheeting / 69″ x 108″ x 17″ each side)
Goals
An exploration of humanity’s irresistible need for creative expression. The concepts of universal energy, creative flow and divine inspiration all allude to instances when we experience ourselves as channels for a powerful, limitless source beyond our individual selves. Yet, if one is ungrounded, the creative flame can singe the moth or melt Icarus’ wings.
SIDE 1: ‘Tree’ Yoga Pose
Yoga Tree Pose requires one to be rooted and tap into the support and power of earth energy. One develops emotional, mental and psychic balance. ‘Knowledge’ mudra (hand gesture) imparts receptivity and calm, and facilitates neural connections between both sides of the brain.
SIDE 2: ‘What if?’ in American Sign Language
Similar in appearance to the ‘Knowledge’ mudra, the up and down movement of the sign for ‘justice’ or ‘judgment’ originates from the idea of weighing the scales of justice.
